From Cathy O'Connor, a story in honor of Paul's 40th birthday:
I remember when Paul was born; we lived next door to his Grandmother, Aunt and favorite cousin. Paul's Mom Dottie was my mother girlhood friend and she and Al had tried for many years to have a child. Well, the excitement and happiness, when Paul arrived. He was perfect, big blue eyes, red hair, and a very happy baby. We were all so happy for Dot and Al. As Paul grew older, we noticed as children do, that he was always very neat; his clothes in particular, were never dirty, worn or ripped. If Paul did get dirty, he had his clothes changed, which in my world was pretty amazing. We were not dirty as our Mom scrubbed us every night, but what you had on at the beginning of the day was it!
Well, Paul came to visit, one weekend when he was about 3 ½. The Sunday of that weekend, Paul had on a very new light colored outfit for Church, and my family came over to visit but we kids decided to go out and play, well Paul want to go with us. It was decided he was old enough to go play with the "big kids" and his mother reluctantly let Paul MurMur-which what Paul called himself at 3 go with us. What we were going to do-which his Mom did not know-was to go to our neighbor house; the neighbor had just gotten a St. Bernard puppy. The St. Bernard was tied up in the back yard and the 5 of us (including Paul MurMur) walked up to the dog. When the giant puppy saw us, he was so excited to see us and the puppy bounded up to the group. Of course as bigger kids, we leaped back, not Paul. The dog got up to Paul, planted his paws on his shoulders and down went Paul. I thought Paul was going to be dog snack food. What would we say to Dot and Al, their precious child eaten by a dog? Well, we froze for a second in horror, and then we pulled the dog off of Paul. Amazingly, Paul was laughing, still petting the dog as we got him up. So it was a relief he was still alive, not hurt at all. But his clothes, they were a mess-grass stains on the back from slamming into the grass, paw prints on the front, dirt on his face and grass/dirt in his hair. So the relief from finding him undamaged was replaced with what a dirty mess he was. We all tried our best to clean him up, but the pristine Paul MurMur was really dirty. Paul still was happy to play with us, but after such a close call, we decided we better give him back-quick.
So we kinda slide up to the front porch of his Gram's house, and called through the screen door, that Paul was back, opened the door, set him inside and we all disappeared. Well Dot never said a word, but it was many years after that Sunday, that Paul played with us not under the direct supervision of his Mom.
Happy Birthday Paul!!
Love,
Cath
