Remembering Bill Moran
We were saddened to learn recently of the passing of Bill Moran of Bayview Avenue, a wonderful neighbor and great supporter of the Higgins Beach Association. Our sincerest condolences and best wishes go out to his wife Nancy and the family.

William Moran passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in Sarasota, Fla.
Moran was a writer and producer at CBS News for 25 years. From 1974 to 1977 he was a principal writer for The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. He was producer on the program for two years before joining CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt, where he served as producer and senior producer for sixteen years, and for which he traveled throughout the U.S. as well as to locations as diverse as China, Iran, Israel, El Salvador and the former Soviet Union. His work at CBS News brought him awards from the Writers Guild of America and an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Prior to joining CBS, Moran was a reporter for the Associated Press, covering events in New England, New York and Washington. He was also a producer and writer at Vermont Public Television and the ABC22 station in Burlington, Vt. While in Vermont, he was a stringer correspondent for The New York Times, The Washington Post and Time magazine. In 2002 his book, The Belles of New England, a history of the women textile mill laborers, was published to excellent reviews.
Moran was born to John Edward and Lillian Cleary Moran on Feb. 5, 1934, in Portland, Maine. He was raised in South Portland with his two sisters, Mary Flaherty and Madeline "Skippy" Hickey, and graduated from South Portland High School in 1953. He served for four years in the U.S. Navy at Camp David and on the USS Northampton, and in 1961 he graduated from Boston University, where he majored in journalism. He resided in Old Greenwich, Conn., from 1971 to 1995 and most recently divided his time between homes at Higgins Beach in Scarborough, Maine and Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club in Sarasota.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Small Moran of Scarborough and Sarasota; two daughters, Lisa of London and Beth of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a grandson, Henry Parker, of London; a sister, Mary Flaherty of Portland; seven nieces, Maureen, Joanne and Mary Lou Flaherty and Rosemary Brown, all of Portland, Pat Flaherty of South Portland, Mary Teale of Woodbridge, Va., and Margaret Biastre of Alexandria, Va.; three nephews, George Hickey of Waldorf, Md., Michael Hickey of Woodbridge, Va., and Thomas Hickey of Baltimore; and many other relatives in the Portland area.
