Social Distancing 100 Years Ago
Then....
I don't believe that the term "social distancing" existed 100+ years ago, but neither did bikinis obviously. This photo was taken in front of Bayview Avenue in 1919. Today's main staircase to the beach would be located just behind the young man standing in the middle of the group, and today, we would be watching this gathering via the web cam which is positioned at the balcony of the cottage. Joanne Kelly's original beach cottage at the corner of Bayview and Pearl Street can be seen at the right of the photo. Note that there was no sea wall behind this group...just lots of sea grass!
This picture was taken just one year after the Spanish flu epidemic. Hopefully, we will all be gathering as closely in the near future.
Now.....
Photo Taken 03/28/2020
Many things have changed in 100 years but not the generic shape of the cottage at the corner of Ocean and Bayview. The stone sea wall masks what is probable a 12'-15' drop in the beach level.
